Dr. Robert Sumner passed away in December 2016. The Biblical Evangelist newspaper is no longer being published and the ministry of Biblical Evangelism has ceased operation.

The remaining inventory of his books and gospel tracts was transferred to The Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles and may be ordered here.

Off the Cuff! (Part 4)
Dr. Robert L. Sumner, Editor

One lone ultra-left judge does it again! U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon tossed out the Congressional vote defunding ACORN (after it was caught on tape advocating lawbreaking). Since the present administration owes its life to those crooks, you may be sure it will make no serious appeal to overturn her...

Did you read about the “Dishonest and Closed Testimony Act” Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings tossed into the hopper the other day? He calls it the "Honest and Open Testimony Act," but it permits Sodomites and fellow travelers to testify in military congressional hearings without fear of retribution. The main problem with that (we have others) is that according to the 1993 law passed by Congress they aren’t even permitted to be in the military…

The CBS soap opera, "As the World Turns" (called by my son, "As the Stomach Turns"), tossed in the towel after over a half-century of polluting the airwaves (more than 13,000 episodes). Two reasons: suckers in the viewing public were dwindling and suckers in the advertising public were wising up...

Thomas Jefferson on Obama’s programs: “The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale"…

A Buzzard denies Jesus is God! Anthony Buzzard, whom Joel Hemphill likes to feature in his ministry, has written a new book (he also has an old one explaining who Jesus is and denying His Deity along with the Trinity). By the way, Joel is promoting his work as “CR,” which he says stands for “Century Reformation.” Frankly, we think “Corrupt Religion” is much more suitable…

With a flick of his pen (signing an executive order), Obama has excluded the international police organization (Interpol) from being subject to our Constitution when investigating American citizens. He did it over the Christmas holidays and without issuing a press release so you probably didn’t hear…

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has never liked the Second Amendment, is now working to do away with people owning small arms worldwide. It is called the United Nation’s Small Arms Treaty and she has pledged the Obama administration’s full support to make it a worldwide law…

The Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation, the outfit causing Gore’s crowd all the grief by releasing evidence of phony research, has released another paper, “Renewed Call to Truth,” seeking to “debunk climate alarmism through sound doctrine, science, and economics.” We wish them well; God knows we need it…

Lantern Road Elementary School second graders at Fishers (IN) had quite an ecumenical songfest last December, singing songs relating to Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Las Posadas and Kwanzaa (sample: "Allah is God, we recall at dawn"). Designed to promote "inclusiveness," FoxNews reported Allah was the only god mentioned, although the Baby Jesus got a "wonder" if his story were really true...

The senate vote in Massachusetts was interesting, to say the least. It was a thunderous message to Obama, Reid and Pelosi that “we the people” feel they are leading us down the wrong road. We will wait and see what Scott Brown does in Washington – we have both good and bad fears…

Still playing the “blame game,” whether it fits or not, on his radio message to America after the failed Christmas Day bombing Obama blamed “poverty.” He said “We know … Yemen [is] a country grappling with crushing poverty and deadly insurgencies.” Mr. President, we also know – as you do, too – that the would-be bomber was from a home of opulence, far, far from poverty…

Attention all atheists: Congressman Samuel Jackson Randall, twice speaker of the House, declared: “Christianity is true. The man who doubts it discredits his own intelligence. I have examined this matter for myself”…

After three months of stalling (while Americans died waiting for help), Obama announced he would listen to the request of the general he anointed for the post and send additional troops to Afghanistan. He also said that after 18 months he would bring all the troops home. I once was young and now am old, but I never before heard of announcing to the enemy when you’d leave the country (winner or loser). Admittedly, it is ‘change’…

For kids who like to grade themselves: Obama gave himself this one on his first year in office: "Good, solid B-plus. B-plus because of the things that are undone ... Health care is not yet signed. If I get health care passed, we tip into A-minus." I guess those who charge him with narcissism must be right! ...

Roman Catholics are against abortion and sodomy, right? Well, maybe not – and we’re not just talking about corrupt politicians who are big Catholics during the campaign, but after election vote 100% opposite. We have in mind the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), a Roman Catholic charity in the San Francisco Archdiocese. That charity funds nearly 50 groups promoting both vices, one even dispensing “morning after” pills to teens. So what is the Archbishop George Niederauer doing to stop it? Absolutely nothing!...

We’ve got it figured out. Obama pledged not to sign any health care bill “if it adds even one dime to our deficit.” All the bills currently in the mix won’t add “one dime,” they’ll add billions!...

My son’s congressman in the Houston area, Dr. Ron Paul, after success eluding him for a quarter of a century, got an amendment passed requiring an audit of the Federal Reserve. It may not pass the Senate, however. Why in the world would any reputable organization fight an audit – you’d expect it, of course, if they were crooked. Surely the feds aren’t crooked, are they?…

Frank Gaffney, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security and now head of the Center for Security Policy, lamenting our loss of security since Barack Hussein Obama took office, defined what he called “the Obama Doctrine: "[It] can best be described in nine words: embolden our enemies, undermine our allies, diminish our country." That about sums it up!...

Last year, a rally of Christians at Hawaii’s capitol building in Honolulu drew 8,000 to 12,000 urging legislators not to pass a same-sex civil union bill. This year a similar rally drew approximately 15,000, with an additional warning that their position was in jeopardy if voting in favor (they wore “iVote” buttons to indicate they meant business). Perverts have traditionally used ‘civil union’ as a stepping stone to full ‘Sodomite marriage’…

While you were sleeping, the House voted to make the death tax permanent, another socialistic plan to share the wealth. Never mind that parents worked and sacrificed all their lives to have something for their children. Greedy, corrupt politicians want to get their hands on it under the guise of “fairness” and “equality”…

Now that Obama has opened the door widely to embryonic (unborn babes) stem cell research – all research therein having produced zip (0) results, while adult stem cells have produced nearly 80 successes – what does it mean? The pace of baby slaughter will greatly increase, with abortionists getting richer on the human corpses…

What would help America’s “jobs” problem and put more folks back to work? (1) Force every employer to use E-Verify or get slapped with a huge fine – wrist slapping is proven unworkable. (2) Cut back on legal immigration for the time being…

Ronald Reagan noted: "The fact is that in the past few decades we have seen a dramatic shift in how we spend the taxpayer's dollar. Back in 1955, payments to individuals took up only about 20 percent of the federal budget. For nearly three decades, these payments steadily increased and, this year, will account for 49 percent of the budget." Got any idea what it is now? 70%? 80%? More?...

Chuck Norris, quoting from an 1809 letter of Thomas Jefferson: "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government." Yet today’s politicians, for the most part, are solidly pro-abortion…

Gore Talk: "Some of the models suggest that there is a 75% chance that the entire north polar ice cap during some of the summer months will be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years." The scientist he referenced as proof said he had no idea where Gore got his misinformation...

Unscrupulous politicians change parties for personal gain, trying to improve their status – that clown in Pennsylvania comes to mind – but what about change for a lesser position? Congressman Parker Griffith of Alabama made the switched from majority Democrat to minority Republican the other day over principal! Maybe there is a statesman or two still left in Washington

Congress worries about giving your hard-earned money away, so it is planning now to add (over all the previous increases of the past year) unemployment benefits totaling $100,000,000,000. All who had great-grandfathers – or even grandfathers – who got any government help when they were out of work, raise your left hand. What did they do when they lost their jobs? They raised their own food, sold apples on street corners, mowed lawns, shoveled snow, and otherwise provided for themselves! The outside help they got was from neighbors, churches and concerned individuals who did so voluntarily. They didn’t feel anyone owed them a living. Help was certainly not considered an “entitlement”…

Even Hitler never lied like this: Nancy Pelosi on ObamaCare: “There has never been a more open process for any legislation.” Maybe the Jesuits convinced Nancy, a Roman Catholic, the end justified the means…

Jefferts Schori is the Episcopalian Church’s presiding bishop. Don’t let the name fool you, however; Jeff is a woman – the first in history for the group. Jeff, in answering Time’s question as to whether Jesus is the only way to Heaven, responded, “For us to assume that God could not act in other ways is, I think, to put God in an awfully small box.” Aside from the fact that God is the one making the “way” decision, we suggest that Episcopalians who believe the Bible put Jefferts “in an awfully small box.” Soon!...

A lot of pundits on the right have been asking what Mary would have done if she had ObamaCare when she found she was pregnant with Jesus. Answer: exactly what she did do! She was a devoted follower of Jehovah! She would have never sought an abortion, the destruction of human life...

Don’t go to Sweden to ‘home school’ your kids. Acting on the United Nations “Rights of the Child,” the Swedish authorities (without any legal warrant) have tried to take Christer and Annie Johansson's seven-year-old son, Dominic, away from them because he is home schooled. HSLDA attorney Mike Donnelly called it “one of the most disgraceful abuses of power we have ever witnessed." If the NEA teachers’ union has its way, the same will be happening soon in America

New Hampshire home schoolers were saved a legal fight recently. Legislators threatened to pass a bunch of silly laws that would have driven many out of business. Cooler heads prevailed and House of Representatives then voted 324-34 to maintain the status quo…

Taxpayer funds are available now for abortions in our nation’s capitol. Thanks to sneaky Democrats burying it in an omnibus spending bill, the Dornan Amendment was repealed by both Congressional bodies, breaking a longstanding prohibition. In the Senate, three Republicans joined the Party of Abortion in voting for the bill: Thad Cochran (MS), Susan Collins (ME) and Richard Shelby (AL)…

This is real change. For the first time in history the White House Christmas card had no mention of Christ and no New Testament quotation. That's what happens when you put pagans in the White House. Perhaps the Obamas knew there would be no "Merry Christmas" for us under their leadership...

According to the Pew Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life – based on the poll question about the importance of religion in their life – Mississippi is the most religious state (82% importance) in the Union. It was no surprise that the New England states of Vermont and New Hampshire were at the bottom of the poll, tied at 36%. We salute Mississippi and Alabama/Arkansas, tied for second (74%). The other New England states – along with Alaska and Colorado – were the least religious…

We commend Liberty University Law School and its dean, Mat Staver, for canceling its co-sponsorship of the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in Washington in February because the group refused to remove a Sodomite activist group as a co-sponsor. Sarah Palin turned down an invitation to speak at the affair for the same reason…

In the meantime, Focus on the Family refused to drop out and sought to justify its action to remain with the Sodomite crowd. Question: since when has perversion, with all the radical agenda it promotes, become part of “conservatism”? No wonder Dobson and his son are talking about starting a new organization…

Need a little humor? Copenhagen, where the global warming "experts" huddled, had its coldest December in history. As comedian Argus Hamilton noted, "If the scientists were all that smart they would have scheduled the conference in August"...

Some of our politicians went to Copenhagen for two days. Here is the cost for their brief holiday: Fifteen Democrats, six Republicans caught the brass ring at cost to taxpayers of $4,406 each just for hotels and food. That does not include transportation or other big items…

Well, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 8-1 (we salute the lone moralist, Utah’s Robert Bennett for his “Nay” vote) to join the previously reported House passing of the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act (23-12). It gives full marriage benefits to Sodomites on the government payroll, something that will take an estimated $63 million a year out of our pockets to start (and you know how these things balloon). Strangely, the goodies will only go to Sodomites, not heterosexuals living in adultery – and folks living in the District had no vote, no voice! The Senate bill was sponsored by Joe Lieberman, who is such a religious Jew that he won’t even ride to the Senate (he walks) when it does business on the Sabbath. Maybe Joe ought to read his Torah and find what it says about Sodomites…

Candlelight services in your church? Not if it is in Homewood (AL) unless you get a permit and have four of the city’s off-duty firemen present. Oh, did we mention the cost of having the firefighters there is $400…

John P. Galligan, the attorney for Islamic killer Nidal Malik Hasan, is claiming the poor boy’s rights have been violated because a guard cut off his phone during a conversation when he was praying from the Koran in Arabic. Hasan, by the way, had been ordered to only speak in English unless an Army-approved translator was present. Killers should play by the rules of law or they don’t play. That is a no violation of ‘rights.’ And this is the first we knew you could talk to Allah by phone!…

Economist Thomas Sowell does the math on health care: "Here is a math problem for you: Assume that the legislation establishing government control of medical care is passed and that it 'brings down the cost of medical care.' You pay $500 a year less for your medical care, but the new costs put on employers is passed on to consumers, so that you pay $300 a year more for groceries and $200 a year more for gasoline, while the new mandates put on insurance companies raise your premiums by $300 a year, how much money have you saved?"…

They take a dim view of teachers having sex with students in Boise (ID). Ashley Jo Beach, a school teacher, pleaded guilty to a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy that lasted several months. The extracurricular fun resulted in a 20-year stint in the slammer for Ashley, but out in four (it should have been 80, out in 40)…

We were assured when Medicare started it would cost about $12 billion in a couple of decades. By that time the actual cost was $110 billion. Its kid sister, Medicaid, started as a $1 billion project. The annual cost of it now is $280 billion. Do you see why we are nervous about a healthcare program the politicians tell us will “only” cost $900 billion?...

In Baltimore (MD) any pregnancy center that does not display a sign saying it doesn’t provide abortions, contraceptives, or make referral for such services can be fined $150 a day. But wait, centers that do provide them are not required to post anything about what they do/don’t provide. Call it an unconstitutional Planned Parenthood law…

Obama appointed Kevin Jennings Assistant Deputy Secretary in the Office of Safe & Drug Free Schools. Jennings, founder of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian Straight Education Network) shouldn’t be allowed within 1,000 feet of a public school. Over 50 members of Congress have asked the president to remove Jennings as unfit for office, saying in part, “It is clear that Mr. Jennings lacks the appropriate qualifications and ethical standards to serve in this capacity." Will it happen? Yeah, when pigs fly...

Ayn Rand (1905-1982), a Russian, in Atlas Shrugged (still #2 best seller, right after the Bible), wrote: "The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government." How true!...

Eastfield College in Texas has banned students in its art department from making crosses or menorahs, putting them in the same class as Nazi swastikas. Joe Mitchell, who was singled out by the school, said he felt humiliated and demeaned. Liberty Legal Institute has taken his case…

The New York Senate, with a Democrat majority, defeated a Sodomite marriage bill in December by a 38-24 vote. Democrat Governor David Paterson had been promoting it and the House had passed it three times. Opposition to the bill was led by Senator Ruben Diaz from Brooklyn, a Pentecostal preacher, whom we have commended in the past for his godly actions…

We like how columnist Wesley Pruden put it: "A liberal mistrusts lessons bought with experience. For him, theory is all. He's the only man who would sit down on a red-hot stove twice. That makes well-meaning Democrats marks for shysters selling health-care 'reform,' global warming and appeasement of radical Islamists"...

To add to what we said last issue about the post office, a USPS inspector general’s audit discovered $800,000 in “unjustified and imprudent purchases” (five-month period). Among other things, 650 workers enjoyed a dinner costing $62,714 (about $96 each), another dinner cost $93 per guest and free lodging was provided even though their office was less than nine miles away (too drunk to get home?), two districts paid $15,000 in movie tickets, and another paid $6,480 for 30 retirement watches…

Remember when Bill O’Reilly, on “60 Minutes,” told host Mike Wallace you and I were “idiots” for disbelieving global warming? Do you think he has had time to eat “crow” for dinner yet?...

Uganda (where HIV is destroying the nation) already has a law on the books imprisoning practicing Sodomites up to 14 years. It has proposed a new law which would make it up to life in prison, and execution for those with HIV – apparently to stop the spread of the disease. SBC mega-church pastor Rick Warren wrote an open letter to ministers there saying such a law would be “unjust, extreme and un-Christian.” God, on the other hand, might approve it (see SBC’s Holman Christian Standard Bible, Leviticus 20:13, “If a man sleeps with a man as with a woman, they have both committed an abomination. They must be put to death; their blood is on their own hands”; it offers the same sentence for either sex mating with an animal, Verses 15, 16)...

Perhaps Uganda’s effort to blot out HIV is concern over the 33 million who have it, including 2 million children, 90% of whom live in Africa (in fact, about 67% of all in the world with HIV are in Africa). So says Baptist Press…

Article I, Section 9 of the United States Constitution says: "No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office or Trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign state." Matthew Spalding, with The Heritage Foundation, wonders, since the Nobel Peace Prize is appointed by the Parliament of Norway, if Obama’s acceptance is a violation and if the Prize belongs to the USA. If so, he had 60 days to turn the $1.4 million over…

These are “churches”? The Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church's General Board of Church and Society, were featured in a "Stop Stupak" rally in Washington, urging the Senate not to include Stupak’s pro-life amendment in its health care bill…

Late last year evangelicals issued a 76-page study, "A Renewed Call to Truth, Prudence, and Protection of the Poor," along with a second piece, "An Evangelical Declaration on Global Warming," calling for “biblical stewardship of creation and careful deliberation in adopting policies designed to counteract ‘manmade global warming.’” They warned against Cap & Trade and the Copenhagen summit. The papers were based on theology, science and economics…

How did the "Copenhagen Accord" end? For the liberals, total failure, just a motion to bring it up again in Mexico and promising billions in help!...

Teddy “Big Stick” Roosevelt: “The things that will destroy America are peace at any price, prosperity at any cost, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living, and the getting-rich-quick theory of life.” Wouldn’t you say political correctness is in that first one?…

Where did “no fault” divorce start? In California, in a law signed by Governor Ronald Reagan. He later called it the biggest mistake of his political career. Indeed!...

QUOTE OF THE MONTH (MARCH): "On the day Copenhagen opened, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency claimed jurisdiction over the regulation of carbon emissions by declaring them an 'endangerment' to human health. Since we operate an overwhelmingly carbon-based economy, the EPA will be regulating practically everything. No institution that emits more than 250 tons of CO2 a year will fall outside EPA control. This means over a million building complexes, hospitals, plants, schools, businesses and similar enterprises ... Not since the creation of the Internal Revenue Service has a federal agency been given more intrusive power over every aspect of economic life ... Forget for a moment the economic effects of severe carbon chastity. There's the matter of constitutional decency. If you want to revolutionize society – as will drastic carbon regulation and taxation in an energy economy that is 85 percent carbon-based – you do it through Congress reflecting popular will. Not by administrative fiat of EPA bureaucrats. Congress should not just resist this executive overreaching, but trump it: Amend existing clean air laws and restore their original intent by excluding CO2 from EPA control and reserving that power for Congress and future legislation. Do it now. Do it soon. Because Big Brother isn't lurking in CIA cloak. He's knocking on your door, smiling under an EPA cap."

– Columnist Charles Krauthammer

QUOTE OF THE MONTH (APRIL): “Every type of destruction that human philosophy, human science, human reason, human art, human cunning, human force, and human brutality could bring to bear against a book has been brought to bear against this Book, and yet the Bible stands absolutely unshaken today. At times almost all the wise and great of the earth have been pitted against the Bible, and only an obscure few for it. Yet it has stood.”

– Dr. Rueben Archer Torrey

Evangelist and Bible Scholar
